# Subledger Overview

> Learn about Subledger Overview in Fynapse.

## Overview

The Subledger is a database used to store a detailed subset of double-entry accounting transactions.

The data are stored in the Subledger at a more detailed level than a general ledger (GL), which aids analysis, reconciliations, and substantiation without overloading the GL. The Subledger provides greater timeliness of financial data compared to a GL, as it operates on a subset of financial information.

A subledger:

* Provides a detailed data store for accounting data at the most granular level
* Feeds summarized entries into the general ledger (GL) for accounting and reporting
* Allows for a thin GL
* Provides a data foundation for reporting and analytic tools

## General Principles

* The subledger stores data at the level of debit/credit pair
* The definition of the [Journal Line](/documentation/processing-configuration/journal-configuration/journal-line-definition) is fully configurable by the client
* All ingested journal lines must conform to the Journal Line Definition configured in Fynapse
* All ingested journals must pass a number of integrity checks
* It is possible for clients to define different accounting treatments as per
  * [Subledger node](/documentation/processing-configuration/node-configurations)
  * [Accounting bases](/documentation/processing-configuration/accounting-bases)
* Users can easily view and interrogate at both the journal line and balance level

## Input and Output Data in the Subledger

### Inputs

Subledger inputs may come from a variety of different sources, such as Accounting Engine, Manual Entry, External Upstream System, and may be of different types, e.g., journal, reference data, FX rate.

### Outputs

The outputs from the subledger are Journal feeds to downstream systems, used for:

* Aggregated financial reporting (e.g., general ledgers/consolidation systems)
* Internal management reporting
